Breakfast #5 on the list

Piece Box in Polwarth

Originally reviewed on April 5th, 2015

His score: 6/6 (first full marks café!)
My score: great, would go again and would recommend

He ate: all day cooked breakfast (£8.50) with Scottish Breakfast tea (£2) and later a slice of Banoffee pie (£3) and another tea (£2).
I ate: "nod to Norway" which is crispbread, crème fraîche, pickles and salmon on a bed of rocket (£6.50) with Scottish Breakfast tea (£2) and later a slice of chocolate chip cake (£3) and also another tea (£2)
Total cost: £29

Our pros: varied menu, great service, lovely atmosphere, good food and lovely décor - even in the toilets. Also, Gary shaved his beard off and left a ridiculous moustache behind the night before but had thankfully shaved that off too before meeting me for breakfast *phew*
Our Cons: tea seemed a little expensive as two pots wound up costing us £8 and I chose possibly the worst thing on the menu but that was my own fault!

Our experience: Piece Box is another all day brunch café so Gary and I headed for "breakfast" around half 12.

Initially we were confused about how to proceed with ordering as we sort of half sat ourselves down with a waitress pointing to free two seater tables and then no one came back over to us for a few minutes but when the other waitress approached us with menus she apologised for not seeing us at first and made some polite small talk before leaving us to order.
I'd decided before we even went to the café that I was going to try something new for once so that's why I chose the nod to Norway, though when sitting down watching Gary eating his cooked breakfast, I couldn't help but be very jealous!

My food was interesting but not very substantial. The salmon was plain salmon rather than smoked (what I usually enjoy) and was a little too fishy for me after a few mouthfuls. The crispbread and crème fraîche was something new and different but I don't think I'd be in any hurry to eat them again. The pickles were sickly sweet and it wasn't until hours later that I realised what it was I'd actually been eating earlier as I'd spent my breakfast munching these strange things thinking "what the fuck am I eating?" then later I remembered that the description on the menu had mentioned pickles.

The food was really nicely presented, though I felt mine seemed more like a snack than a meal so after food we decided to get a cake each and another pot of tea.
Gary said his food was very tasty and well cooked. The sausage in particularly was very nice and the poached egg was perfect.

I can report that the café not only has sauce on the tables (about time!) but they also had a big container of sugar so there was thankfully no repeat of last week's sugar debacle.

Gary and I wound up sharing two pots of tea which gave us about 5 cups of tea each, though when I saw the bill I realised we'd managed to drink £8 worth of tea which seemed a bit steep and after we left we were waddling a bit with the amount of tea in our bellies so I wouldn't recommend drowning yourself in tea if you were to go yourself.

The service was really nice and genuine, every waitress was really friendly and seemed like they were enjoying their jobs.
When our bill was delivered the waitress even gave us chocolates and wished us a happy Easter and both waitresses that served us made nice comments about my camera too and mentioned that they're on Instagram and if we @ the café with any pictures of our meal then we get the chance to win free cake.

Gary gave this place full marks and I would definitely recommend it. It was really quiet, spacious, with lovely décor and views out onto the street.
Today in particular because of the sunshine it made it even better sitting in the window and the service never faltered so we were sure to leave a tip at the end. The cakes were very nice, as was the tea but if I was to go back I would definitely order something different for brunch!
What’s next: Nobles Bar on Constitution Street.
