Breakfast List #1, Breakfast #3, Kilimanjaro Coffee on Nicolson Street

Breakfast #3 on the list.

 Kilimanjaro Coffee on Nicolson Street.

Originally reviewed on March 22nd, 2015

His score: 1.8/6 (originally 2.5/6 but revised after further contemplation)
My score: absolute rubbish - do not go

He ate: veggie breakfast (£6.60) and a tea (£1.80)

I ate: the Kili Breakfast - a full cooked breakfast (£6.90) and I also ordered a tea but wasn't given one or charged for it.
Total cost: £15.30

Our pros: breakfast served until 5pm on Sundays.

Our cons: stingy portions of tea; I wasn't given the tea I ordered; slow and extremely inattentive service; very cramped in some parts of the café; tiny tables paired with giant plates making eating very difficult and precarious; very average tasting food, if not mediocre, and extremely busy and quite noisy

Our experience: Brunch is served until 5pm at Kilimanjaro.

*Groan* Right, where to start?

I have to begin with saying neither Gary nor myself were in any way bowled over by this place and it's immediately been plunged to the bottom of the list below City Café. Also, when Gary phoned up to ask if they took bookings the employee on the phone basically said "no, we don't do that" and tried to hang up.

We managed to get a seat right away but only because a couple had just cleared out the second that we got there so we ran and grabbed the only free table still laden with dirty dishes from the previous occupants.

There's no table service or menus at the tables so we went up to the counter to check out the menu on the wall where a collection of other semi-confused patrons were stood leaving us unsure if they were queueing, browsing or simply contemplating the complexities of life. The staff behind the counter actively ignored all of us and didn't ask if anyone was waiting to be served so once Gary and I decided what to order, we just approached the till and hoped we weren't skipping in front of anyone else.

We ordered two teas with our breakfasts initially but were given and charged for only one so we had to share the tiny teapot between the two of us.

After ordering we went back to our seats to await our food and had to wait a few minutes before anyone came to clear away the dirty dishes. When a staff member came to deliver our tea they spilt it on our table whilst scrabbling to pull away the dirty dishes and vaguely apologised for the mess.

After tossing the cutlery down on the table with absolutely no finesse Gary asked if we could get another cup for the tea (as we had ordered two), the guy clearing our table walked away without a response so we didn't know if that was a yes or no! A waitress later appeared with a cup and dropped in on the table and sauntered off without a word.

Breakfast was served a few minutes after that (so probably not very fresh food!) and we noticed then that the table we were eating at was so minuscule that attempting to arrange our plates, cups and cutlery to fit was like a very boring puzzle.

The food was passable but very dry and bready. The marmalade with the meal was tangy and sour, the fried eggs were almost flavourless, t
he teapots with our breakfast were tiny and the tea wasn't very flavoursome.

The place was very busy and very studenty. It was also extremely cramped and where we were sat had us rammed up against about 4 other customers.

Neither of us would go back. It was busy, noisy and cramped, with average food and bad service. I wouldn't recommend going at all unless it was a quieter day but you wouldn't be missing anything by getting your breakfast elsewhere.

When asked if he had any further comments, Gary remarked "just shit." And also described the staff and other customers as "twats", so there you go!

What's next: Heller's Kitchen on Salisbury place.

Hopefully that one will be better for us!
